LAKE REPORTS
Central Texas Catfish
Catfish inhabit almost all the waters of Texas from small ponds and streams to the largest lakes and
Gulf of Mexico. They thrive in areas with lots of cover and abundant baitfish. We generally target only
two of the many species of catfish that are available. Channel catfish and Blue cats are good fighters
and provide excellent table fare. While catfish are predators, they will not pass up an easy meal. They
use their excellent sense of smell to locate dead and dying baitfish that have fallen to the bottom. To
target them, we mimic this by using baits that have strong odors to tempt them into biting. These are
commonly called "stink baits", but we also use cut bait such as shad, perch, and liver. Catfish are also
commonly taken on live perch, crawfish, grasshoppers, and earthworms. As mentioned earlier, catfish
love structure. Bridge pilings, submerged timber, undercut banks, and rocky outcroppings are good
places to start looking for catfish. Generally, if you can find good structure close to a deep hole there
will be catfish in the area. When going after catfish, we usually leave in the late evening and fish from
sundown until Midnight or so. Bella Misty is equipped for navigation after dark and has a well lit deck. If
you really want a challenge, ask us about fishing for trophy Flathead Catfish on rod and reel. For these
large hard fighting fish, patience is the name of the game but can be very rewarding
