Fishing Galveston Bay

For Shark

by Guy Focke, Saltwater Adventures Fishing Guide

Shark fishing on the Galveston beach front is fun and exciting for everyone. During the months between May thru October, Black Tip sharks, Spinner sharks and Bull shark roam the waters of the Galveston Beach Front.

In the summer months it is easy to catch 20 to 40 sharks a day ranging from 25 lbs up to 400lbs and over 6 feet in length. Typically the sharks we catch are Black tips and Spinner sharks. These sharks are quite fun to catch on light tackle.

Sharks like to jump out of the water several time and will even turn circle in mid air. Sharks also have incredible strength. One large shark can tire even the most experienced angler. I like to drift fish for sharks with dead shad and green or orange jigs under a balloon or on the bottom. At times you can catch sharks behind a shrimp boat by casting mirrow lures at them.

A shark has been known to hit almost anything when they are in a feeding frenzy. Sharks can be caught in water that ranges from 20 feet to 55 feet. The small black tip and spinner sharks under 40 lbs are very good to eat. Some seafood restaurants in Houston and Galveston have them on the menu.

When catching any type of shark, please be careful with them. If you are not going to keep sharks, release them carefully as you would any other fish.

One last note, always respect a shark when he is put in the boat. They have a tendency to whip their tail and destroy anything that is in the way, especially your legs.
